When to Appear on Someone Else’s Site…. And When Not To

One of the most powerful biz building techniques I use is either hosting or visiting other blog/site owners via free teleclasses. Not only do I love to share info this way with my own list, I naturally want to get out there and spread my platform mission to newcomers. And doing it through the free call is effective.

That said, there are a few things to be aware of. Pick partners who really do reach your audience (and if you don’t know exactly who that is … well you haven’t even started truly marketing your business.) Ideally, you want to visit sites with the following caveats…

Make sure your hosting site is not a direct competitor. Nothing is bleaker than pouring your heart out on a call only to have one of the callers say ….’Uh …what’s the difference between your product and [INSERT HOST’S NAME]? If you don’t know, you look dumb. If you do know and you can’t explain the difference … well, don’t expect a lot of sales.

Make sure the hosted list is responsive. Don’t be afraid to ask what the usual conversion rate is on a call hosted this way. Could be these are folks who are just into freebies. And if you want lots more freebie followers, cool. If not, move on. So … at least ask. Or better yet, confer with peers who’ve been there.

Make sure someone is showing up. Maybe it’s just me, but I really don’t like doing a call for five people. And I say you shouldn’t either. Yes, far more people will listen to the download.  Maybe. Be wary of calls that are only broadcast to limited audiences, because who shows up will be a much smaller number. SO don’t be afraid to ask how many people are likely to attend.

Make sure you know who these folks are before the call … and check in with who’s there and what they’re looking for at the start of the call. In other words, you don’t want to skew your talk towards life coaches only to find the audience is more writers and speakers.

Finally, be sure you can reciprocate effectively if this is a swap-style joint venture. For instance, if you know your people don’t like teleclasses and don’t show up for them … don’t promise that. Offer your partner just what you think will truly work for them. What goes around comes around, so make a point of really providing value to your partner – and plenty will come your way.
